3 Great Packing Tips That Could Save You A Whole Load Of Stress When Moving

blog13Whether you’re upgrading to a bigger pad, or downsizing after your family have flown the nest one thing’s for sure, moving (particularly packing) is a stressful business. Where do you start? What do you pack first? Will you even get it all done? are undoubtedly questions that are going to be buzzing around in your head. However if you stop for a minute, take a deep breath and start planning, then your move might go a lot smoother than you think (Well, at least from a packing perspective anyhow). With this in mind, here’s a 1,2,3 of packing that you might want to follow.

Step 1- You’ve gotta have a plan!

You might know the saying “failing to plan is planning to fail” and this definitely applies to packing. If you don’t plan ahead then you run the risk of packing items before their time, and some will get lost and even broken. Instead have a distinct room plan for each room detailing important factors like when items get packed, how it’s packed and in what order.

Step 2 – Label as if your life depended upon it

Let’s face it, when we’re packing items to move, everything gets packed into brown boxes that are exactly the same size. If you have a multitude of them, how are you ever going to locate something in one of those said boxes if you don’t label them. Whether you have an intricate colour scheme, coded lists or something as simple as writing ‘kitchen no 1’ on the outside of the box, then do whatever is easy for you, but make sure it’s labelled.

Step 3 – Fits and starts is best

This is probably the most difficult part because it’s a ‘big picture’ task. However if you break that task down into smaller chunks such as rooms, then you can plan when they need to be packed. This saves a ton of time unpacking things you suddenly need that have already been packed. In addition you can start with the room that gets used the least, maybe a junk or storage room if you have one, and finish with more popular rooms where items are used up until the last minute such as the lounge or bedroom.

So there you have it, 3 steps to packing bliss!

4 Tips When Moving With Dogs

blog11Let’s face it, moving can be pretty tough on us humans, but at least we know what’s going on. Well…most of the time anyway! However when it comes to out canine companions, then it’s often a different story. That said, there are things that you can do in order to make the transitional move for your dog that much easier. Let’s take a look…

Be yourself
There’s many a true word spoken when we say that a dog’s life is it’s owner. Dogs really don’t care too much about where they are or what they’re doing. just as long as they have a happy owner who tends to pay attention to them. So even if it’s the day before the move and you’ve got a million and one things to do, don’t forget to make some time for your pooch. If you’re stressed out and way too busy to even look at them, then this is when problems can escalate.

Maintain routine
Dogs are very routine led and much of their behaviour hinges on preserving this routine. Therefore it’s advisable to make sure that your move doesn’t disrupt their routine too much. If they always have a morning walk, then continue this on the day of the move. If they have food at a certain time then try to make sure that this is maintained. Even though there may be chaos going on around you, if you stick to the same routine as closely as possible, it’s going to be far easier for your dog to adapt to new surroundings.

Familiarity
Dogs like familiarity. They like to know where they are, they like the same smells, and enjoy seeing the same dogs and people. Therefore if you do have time and it’s possible to do so, then why not take your dog to your new area and walk them round so that they become familiar with it. This way the transition will be far less intimidating for them.

Spoil them
Okay so we all probably spoil our dogs a little too much anyhow, but before, during and just after the house move many dogs feel angst and uncertainty. This is why they might need extra cuddles, walks, and even the odd treat. The extra attention that your dogs gets during this time is key so try not to skip this part.

Moving – Is It More Of A Modern Day Phenomenon?

blog10According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics around 76% of the population have moved home at least once in their life, 46% have moved at least twice and 11% have moved more than 5 times. While this may seem surprising to some is moving really a modern-day phenomenon? Not according to the history books!

If you go back through the annals of time to the earliest days of civilisation, it’s said that without human migration, the world as we know it probably wouldn’t even exist. Let’s take a look.

Africa To Eurasia
Around 85,000 years ago in Africa, dramatic climatic changes caused the Homo-Erectus to migrate out of Africa in order to find food and water. As a result it’s believed that they crossed the Red Sea into what was then known as Eurasia. This mass migration didn’t happen overnight and instead took place over 100’s of years but as people began to settle, out of it came the first true Europeans and the first true Asians.

Northern Europe and North America – The Ice Age
Around 40,000 years ago human migration saw expansion into Northern Europe (Siberia) and across the vast ice bridge that became the Bearing Straight into North America (Alaska). The first settlers were greeted by swathes of frozen landscape, but their knowledge of hunting, fire making and fashioning primitive tools meant that what first appeared as baron frozen wastelands, became an incredibly fertile place teaming with fish where humans could not only survive, but also thrive.

Going South
In addition and around the same period, migrants also headed south and down through maritime South East Asia. During this period the process of glaciation resulted in incredibly low sea levels meaning that the islands of New Guinea were adjoined to Australia. As a result the first migrants found their way to Oceania where they became the first true indigenous people.

So there you have it! A brief, but hopefully interesting look at human migration!

Although the reasons for doing so have changed, you could say that moving is deeply ingrained in our psyche and as such we will always be a nomadic species. Even though life or death no longer depends on moving or relocating, we still seem keen to do it and in the process, we happily take on what is in reality a very stressful event. Maybe we’re in search of our own slice of ‘pastures new’ …who knows!.
