Moving – Is It More Of A Modern Day Phenomenon?

blog10According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics around 76% of the population have moved home at least once in their life, 46% have moved at least twice and 11% have moved more than 5 times. While this may seem surprising to some is moving really a modern-day phenomenon? Not according to the history books!

If you go back through the annals of time to the earliest days of civilisation, it’s said that without human migration, the world as we know it probably wouldn’t even exist. Let’s take a look.

Africa To Eurasia
Around 85,000 years ago in Africa, dramatic climatic changes caused the Homo-Erectus to migrate out of Africa in order to find food and water. As a result it’s believed that they crossed the Red Sea into what was then known as Eurasia. This mass migration didn’t happen overnight and instead took place over 100’s of years but as people began to settle, out of it came the first true Europeans and the first true Asians.

Northern Europe and North America – The Ice Age
Around 40,000 years ago human migration saw expansion into Northern Europe (Siberia) and across the vast ice bridge that became the Bearing Straight into North America (Alaska). The first settlers were greeted by swathes of frozen landscape, but their knowledge of hunting, fire making and fashioning primitive tools meant that what first appeared as baron frozen wastelands, became an incredibly fertile place teaming with fish where humans could not only survive, but also thrive.

Going South
In addition and around the same period, migrants also headed south and down through maritime South East Asia. During this period the process of glaciation resulted in incredibly low sea levels meaning that the islands of New Guinea were adjoined to Australia. As a result the first migrants found their way to Oceania where they became the first true indigenous people.

So there you have it! A brief, but hopefully interesting look at human migration!

Although the reasons for doing so have changed, you could say that moving is deeply ingrained in our psyche and as such we will always be a nomadic species.
